Replace Your Windshield Wipers & Fluid
DIY: Replace Windshield Wipers and Fluid
One of the simplest DIY maintenance procedures you can do on your car is to change out your windshield wiper blades and refill your washer fluid. We’ll walk you through the steps so you can learn how to do this yourself.

Industry experts recommend replacing your wiper blades every six months to a year. If they are cracked, leaving streaks, or stuttering across your window, they need to be replaced.

How To:

To start this job, you will need new wiper blades and washer fluid. Make sure the blades are the correct size for your car, and if you have a rear window blade, don’t forget that one.
  1. Remove the old blade. Lift the blade until it locks into an upright position. Look for a tab or button that you need to lift or press to remove the blade. Then, slide the blade off the arm. Gently lay the arm back down on your windshield so it doesn’t snap back down and crack your window. Repeat with the second blade.

  2. Install the new blade. Read any installation instructions included with your new blades. Putting on the new blades may be a little more difficult than it was taking off the old one, but once you get it into position, it should snap into place. Repeat with the second arm.

To refill your washer fluid, open your hood and look for the reservoir. It should be located near the edge of the engine bay and have a picture of a windshield being sprayed on it. Open the cap and use a funnel to pour in the new fluid so you don’t spill it all over your engine. Fill the reservoir until it reaches the maximum fill line.
